Plans to build two new padel tennis courts at the Harrogate Sports and Fitness Club have been recommended for approval by North Yorkshire Council. The proposal, which includes the construction of two 23 x 27 meter courts with netting and an 11-meter tall canopy, is set to be reviewed by the council’s Harrogate and Knaresborough planning committee on August 29.
Padel tennis, a sport that combines elements of tennis and squash, has seen a surge in popularity in recent years. The new courts are expected to enhance the existing facilities at the club, which already offers two outdoor padel courts, squash courts, and a gym. The proposed location for the new courts is adjacent to the club’s car park and near the Hookstone Nature Reserve.
The planning application also includes a provision for a grassed area to be used as event parking for up to 80 days a year, in association with the nearby Yorkshire Show Ground. This aspect of the plan has raised some concerns among local residents and environmentalists, particularly regarding potential light pollution and the removal of a goat willow tree. However, the club has addressed these issues by providing additional information on lighting levels and the ecological impact of the tree removal.
Supporters of the project argue that the new courts will boost participation in sports and promote healthy lifestyles in the community. They believe that the additional facilities will be a valuable asset to Harrogate, offering more opportunities for residents to engage in physical activity.
On the other hand, some objections have been raised about the potential impact on the local environment and the proximity of the courts to Hookstone Woods, an important wildlife corridor. Critics are concerned that the development could disrupt the natural beauty of the area and set a precedent for further construction.
The upcoming council meeting will be crucial in determining the future of this project. If approved, the new padel tennis courts could become a popular addition to Harrogate’s sports infrastructure, providing residents with more options for recreation and fitness.
