Recently, the Rawdon Lawn Tennis, Padel, and Golf Club joined together to raise more than £1,300 for Womankind Worldwide.

Womankind Worldwide is a feminist worldwide women’s rights organization with headquarters in the United Kingdom that strives to improve women’s lives by standing in solidarity with women’s movements across the globe.

Rosie Connell, a member of the tennis club, became an advocate for Womankind Worldwide after visiting Nepal and seeing firsthand the suffering endured by the country’s women and families. Therefore, there was only one organization in mind to help when a charity event was suggested.

Jan Spence, of the club said: “As a female section in the club, we feel so much for the women of the world who do not have access to the opportunities we get in our lives which includes the golf, padel, tennis facilities at our local club. Since we are so fortunate in so many ways, we felt it was a good time to try to make a difference to those that don’t have access to the basics, never mind the luxuries.”

Over the course of a week, activities began on July 23 with a ladies’ golf day led by Lady Captain Liz Pennington and a tennis social event and quiz hosted by Lily Wong the same evening.

On July 24 a Padel event brought together by Rosie Connell (GB Seniors Padel) took place and a ladies Festival of Padel took place on July 26 with Nicky Horn (GB Seniors Padel) and support from the Rackets Department Secretary Sally Bickerton (also a GB Senior Padel player & Rackets Secretary) and a number of other volunteers.

Jan revealed: “It all started well with the golf competition on the Tuesday and the weather shone as a good omen for the rest of the week. The Tennis event was later that evening with the attendees enjoying an ‘American Style’ tournament. Following up with the Padel event on the Wednesday with a day long mixed padel tournament for 32 players. The event included a book lucky dip and bottle tombola. The event and weather could not have been better and all that attended had a brilliant day.
