Milan, Italy – The air was thick with nostalgia and emotion as the legendary Fernando Belasteguín, fondly known as “Bela,” played his final professional match at the Milano Premier Padel P1. The event, held from December 2-8, 2024, marked the end of an era for the sport of padel.
Bela, who has dominated the padel world for over three decades, announced earlier this year that the 2024 season would be his last. With an astounding 230 titles out of 286 finals and a record 16-year streak as the world number one, Bela’s career is nothing short of extraordinary.
The final match saw Bela team up with rising star Tino Libaak, and they sailed through the first round with ease. However, the second round brought a bittersweet moment as they faced off against Lucas Bergamini and Javi Garrido. Despite a valiant effort, Bela and Libaak were defeated 6-3, 6-4, marking the end of Bela’s illustrious career.
The stadium erupted in chants of “Bela, Bela, Bela!” as fans from around the world gathered to pay tribute to the man who redefined padel. Tears were shed, not just by Bela but by many in the crowd who had followed his journey over the years.
In a heartfelt speech after the match, Bela expressed his gratitude to his fans, teammates, and the sport that had given him so much. “Padel has been my life, and I am honored to have been a part of its growth,” he said. “I may be stepping off the court, but I will continue to be a part of this wonderful sport in other ways.”
Bela’s legacy will live on through his partnership with Wilson Sporting Goods, where he has been an integral part of their Advisory Staff programme. His contributions to the sport, both on and off the court, have left an indelible mark on padel.
As the final match concluded, it was clear that while one chapter had ended, another was just beginning. Bela’s journey may have reached its conclusion, but his influence on padel will continue to inspire future generations of players and fans alike.
Thank you, Bela, for everything you’ve given to the sport and to us. Your legacy will forever be etched in the annals of padel history.
