A new leisure complex is set to transform the historic Chatham Docks in Kent. Fresh plans have been submitted to Medway Council, proposing the redevelopment of the former Machine Shop 8 into a vibrant hub featuring restaurants and a padel tennis centre.

The site, originally built in 1845 as a dry dock cover, is a Grade II listed structure. The skeletal, cast-iron frame of the building has recently undergone checks and repairs, ensuring it is stable and safe for the proposed changes. The redevelopment aims to breathe new life into this historic landmark, creating a space that blends modern leisure activities with the site’s rich heritage.

The central hall of the complex will house five padel tennis courts. Padel tennis, a sport that combines elements of tennis and squash, is played on a smaller court with a solid perforated paddle. This sport has been gaining popularity worldwide and is known for being accessible to players of all ages and skill levels.

In addition to the padel tennis centre, the western side of the frame will be transformed into a dining area with several new restaurants. These eateries will offer a variety of culinary experiences, with outdoor seating overlooking the docks, providing a picturesque setting for diners. The complex will also include a new car park with disabled parking bays and barrier-free access to ensure inclusivity.

The proposed development presents an opportunity to repurpose the existing structure while preserving its historical significance. The plans are currently awaiting approval from Medway Council, and if given the green light, this project promises to be a significant addition to Kent’s leisure and dining scene.
