Weybridge’s plans to construct three padel tennis courts have been approved in spite of multiple complaints about noise levels. Proponents of the plans highlighted the region’s sporting advantages; a recent Insider story looked at the expansion of padel businesses throughout the UK.

The St Georges Hill Lawn Tennis Club, situated on Warreners Lane in Weybridge, would get three semi-enclosed padel tennis courts constructed as a result of the application.

Originally constructed in 1913 as a lawn tennis and croquet club, the club’s amenities have since been expanded to include a gymnasium, swimming pool, fitness studio, and new changing areas. Due to the courts’ location in a residential area, the proposal has been met with more than 15 objections pertaining to noise levels.

According to the council study, because of the smaller court size and racquet type, padel tennis is a court sport that is naturally noisier than tennis. There is more impact where the ball strikes the racquet because the racquets are flat and stringless.

After receiving more than ninety letters of support, Elmbridge Borough Council decided to grant the proposal in spite of the objections during a planning meeting on July 23.
