Key Biscayne Village Council has approved a new indoor padel facility as part of a redesigned development at the island’s gateway. The project, led by developer David Martin of Terra Group, replaces a previously approved multi-use complex with a more modest plan focused on sports and office space. The new structure will feature padel courts, a café, and a small office area, totaling around 5,000 square feet.
A fresh approach to design and community impact
Unlike the earlier proposal, which included retail and extensive office space, the revised plan emphasizes low-scale architecture and landscaping. Martin’s team presented renderings that highlight vertical wooden elements and greenery, aiming to create a visually appealing entrance to the island. The padel courts are expected to draw interest as the sport gains popularity globally, with Olympic consideration on the horizon.
Historical significance and future use
The site at 12-22 Crandon Blvd. carries local history, once home to La Carreta restaurant and Stefano’s Lounge nightclub. Martin is leasing the property from ES KB Partners LLC, which purchased it in 2015. Initially, the office space will serve as a sales center for Martin’s nearby condominium development, 301 Ocean Drive.
Community response and next steps
The council’s approval reflects growing enthusiasm for padel and a desire to enhance the island’s entrance with thoughtful development. With construction plans underway, the facility is poised to become a new recreational and social hub for residents and visitors alike.
