Shankill Tennis Club has unveiled a major upgrade to its facilities, introducing two new padel courts, a hitting wall, and two junior tennis courts. This development is part of a collaborative effort with Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council and was supported by a €245,000 Sports Capital Grant awarded in 2022.
The club, which has served the community for over 30 years and boasts around 850 members, continues to grow as one of Ireland’s largest multisport venues. Chairperson Carol Beamish emphasized the club’s inclusive mission, highlighting programmes that cater to players of all ages and abilities—including wheelchair and visually impaired tennis.
Frank Curran, chief executive of DLR, said “Shankill Tennis Club has long been a leader in promoting sport and inclusion, and these new facilities will further enhance opportunities for people of all ages and abilities.”
Local officials praised the project for enhancing recreational opportunities and promoting health and wellbeing. Councillor Jim Gildea noted that the new courts would bring lasting benefits to the area, reinforcing the club’s role as a hub for community sport.
With these new courts, Shankill Tennis Club is positioning itself at the forefront of this trend while continuing to support traditional tennis and emerging sports like pickleball.
The expansion reflects a shared commitment to accessible, high-quality sports facilities and a vibrant, active community.
