Former Swiss national football team star Marco Streller has embraced a new challenge, leading the development of padel across Switzerland by managing 67 courts. The growth of the sport has been remarkable, and Streller is at the forefront of efforts to bring it to a wider audience.
Padel has gained popularity for its accessibility and fast-paced nature. The sport’s appeal extends across all age groups and skill levels, making it an attractive option for both casual players and competitive athletes.
This is what he said:
“It’s very easy to learn, because of the walls where the ball always comes back, you often have the ball on the racket. If you quickly realize that you’re successful at something new that you’re doing, you’re happy to do it. It’s easier than in other sports to get to a better level.”
Streller, leveraging his experience in professional sports, has identified key factors behind padel’s success in Switzerland. He notes that the combination of social engagement, simplicity, and exciting gameplay has contributed to its widespread adoption. The infrastructure expansion, including the opening of new courts and facilities, has further solidified its presence in the country.
“We believe that the padel potential is far from exhausted. We have comparative figures from Sweden, for example, where the peak has been reached. But they have around ten times as many halls as we do,” he added
“There are still people who don’t know about padel. 90% of people who play for the first time come back. I believe that the demand is even greater than the supply.”
The former footballer believes that padel has the potential to grow even further, attracting more players and fostering a vibrant sporting community. As Switzerland continues to embrace the sport, Streller’s leadership ensures that padel remains on an upward trajectory, offering enthusiasts a unique and engaging way to stay active. The momentum behind padel’s rise shows no signs of slowing down, marking the beginning of a new era for racket sports in the region.
