New “Star Point” system announced by FIP

The International Padel Federation (FIP) has introduced a new regulation that modifies how matches are decided when reaching 40-40. This adjustment aims to make games more dynamic and decisive, reducing prolonged exchanges at deuce.

How the system works

Under the new rule, players will be allowed a maximum of two advantages once the score reaches 40-40. If the game reaches a third deuce, the so-called “Star Point” will be played. At this moment, both receivers will decide which side of the court will return the serve, adding a strategic element to the match.

Strategic implications

This innovation is designed to increase tension and excitement in critical moments. By limiting the number of advantages and introducing a decisive point, matches are expected to become more engaging for spectators while challenging players to adapt their strategies.

Voices from the federation

“The Star Point is a step forward to make padel more attractive and fair, ensuring matches remain thrilling without unnecessary prolongation,” said Luigi Carraro, president of the International Padel Federation.

Impact on the sport

The introduction of the Star Point reflects FIP’s commitment to evolving the sport and responding to the demands of both players and fans. By balancing tradition with innovation, padel continues to strengthen its position as one of the fastest-growing racket sports worldwide.
