The International Padel Federation (FIP) and Premier Padel are evaluating a significant change to match scoring. The idea under discussion is the reintroduction of the golden point, but only after a series of advantages within a game. The goal is to shorten match duration while maintaining the competitive essence of padel.
Consultation process
Officials have confirmed that new regulations are expected to take effect next year. “Next year several rule changes will come into effect, including the introduction of a third scoring option. This system has been discussed within the International Padel Federation and also with Premier Padel, as well as in the Steering Committee, where players, coaches, promoters, sponsors, broadcasters and partners are represented. Now we want to open a consultation also with professional players.”
Balancing tradition and innovation
The proposed scoring system aims to protect both the spirit of the sport and the health of its athletes. “We must innovate the product, anticipate changes, protecting the essence of padel but also the health of the players. A concrete example: the first game of the match between Ari Sánchez and Paula Josemaría against Alejandra Salazar and Martina Calvo lasted 18 minutes and 30 seconds. With the new scoring system it would last about 4 and a half minutes. This means less fatigue for the players and more fun for the public. That is why we have started this process and we will complete it by listening to everyone.”
Impact on players and fans
If implemented, the golden point after multiple advantages could reduce fatigue and increase the pace of matches. For players, this adjustment would mean less physical strain during long rallies. For fans, it promises more dynamic games and heightened excitement, ensuring padel remains engaging and accessible.
Future of padel scoring
The consultation with professional players will be crucial in determining whether the golden point system is adopted. By involving athletes, coaches, promoters, and broadcasters, FIP and Premier Padel aim to create a balanced solution that enhances the sport without compromising its integrity.
