Alejandro Galán and Federico Chingotto have officially withdrawn from the FIP Platinum Lyon, despite being listed in the tournament’s initial entry. Their decision reshapes the draw and shifts attention to other rising pairings.
A Surprise Withdrawal After Milano Triumph
Galán and Chingotto, currently ranked No. 2 on the Premier Padel circuit, were expected to headline the FIP Platinum Lyon. Their participation would have marked the first appearance by a top-four duo in a FIP event this season. However, following their victory over Tapia and Coello in the Milano P1 final, the pair opted to rest instead of competing in Lyon.
“The European tour has been intense, and we felt it was the right moment to recover,” Galán said after the Milano final, according to Mundo Deportivo.
Their win in Milan narrowed the gap to the No. 1 pairing by 400 points. With Tapia and Coello skipping the upcoming Newgiza P2, Galán and Chingotto are strategically positioned to challenge for the top spot. Lyon could have added another 300 points to their tally, but the duo chose to prioritize recovery ahead of the season’s final stretch.
Lyon Draw Reshaped
With Galán and Chingotto out, Martín Di Nenno and Javi Leal step in as the top seeds. Di Nenno, known for his consistency, pairs with Leal, one of Spain’s emerging talents. Their combination of experience and youth makes them strong contenders for the title.
The second seeds are Momo González and Fran Guerrero, who recently debuted their partnership in Rotterdam. Their aggressive style and chemistry have drawn attention, and Lyon offers a chance to solidify their standing.
Edu Alonso and Juan Tello round out the top three seeds. Tello’s power and Alonso’s tactical play could make them one of the tournament’s most unpredictable duos.
A Crucial Stop Before Barcelona
The FIP Platinum Lyon is one of the final events before the Premier Padel Finals in Barcelona, where only the top 16 players will qualify. Every point and performance matters, and Lyon offers a platform for emerging pairs to make their mark.
With Galán and Chingotto stepping aside, the tournament opens up for new narratives and potential surprises. The battle for ranking points and momentum heading into Barcelona is intensifying, and Lyon now plays a pivotal role in shaping the season’s conclusion.
